Now that you have set up your self-hosted wordPress blog, you must be excited about writing your very first blog post. Before that, give yourself a pat on the back for coming this far.
In this guide, we will talk about how to write a post in WordPress. I will show you how to add images, links, embed YouTube videos, format text and much more. I will also share some post writing tips and tricks along the way.
Adding a new post
To add a new post, click on the “Posts” section on your WordPress dashboard then click on “Add New”. Alternatively, you can click on the “+” icon located at the top of the dashboard and then click “Post”.
Here’s how the screen would look like.
Your blog title will be entered in the top field and you content goes in the big text box below. You will also see a few formatting options along with a “Visual” and “Text” tab.
The “Visual” tab is used for easy writing and the “Text” tab is used to enter HTML content. You should also click on the “Toolbar toggle” option to get additional formatting options.
On the right side of the page, you will find the Publish menu. You can use the options here to Publish your post, save as a draft and even schedule it.
Below the Publish menu, you can use the Categories menu to add or select a category for your blog post. This helps in organizing your posts in a better way and helps readers in easy navigation.
Tip: I prefer using the “Distraction-free writing mode” while writing my blog posts on WordPress, by clicking on the button highlighted below. This hides everything from the screen except the post box.
Using the formatting options
To make your post visually appealing and easier to read, it is recommended to used the various formatting options.
I often use the drop-down to add a heading. Just select a piece of text and choose the type of heading from the drop-down menu.
You can also change the appearance of the text in the content by using the formatting options. Here’s what each alphabet means.
B is for bold.
I is for italics.
U is to underline the text.
A will open a drop-down menu which can be used to select the text colour.
There are other options like blockquote, special characters etc. Why don’t you start exploring them now!
To add an image to you blog post, click on the “Add Media” button located below the “Add New Post” text box.
The “Insert Media” box will pop up. Click on “Select Files” to select and upload your images. Alternatively, you can drag and drop multiple image files on this box from you computer to upload is easily.
Once the upload is completed, select the image and click on “Insert into post” to place the image in your blog post. Take a moment to enter the “Title”, “Alt Text” and other fields (as needed) before inserting the image.
Adding links to your blog post is a good way to direct readers to a useful source of information. It also helps you in building relationships with fellow bloggers by linking to their content.
To add a link, click on the “Insert/edit link” button. A small pop-up box will appear where you can type the URL, or search your blog posts if you want to internally link to a specific post of yours.
You can click on the gear icon to explore additional options. Let’s discuss what these options mean.
URL: This is the web address of the target link. Make sure that you are entering the correct information here, else the link will be broken and it won’t be a good experience for your readers.
Link Text: This is the anchor text that has to be clicked to navigate to your link. It can be a simple ‘click here’ or anything that you deem fit.
Open link in a new window/tab: It is important to check this box when you are linking to external websites. By checking this box, a new tab will open when a reader clicks on the link. This way the reader won’t leave your blog and they can still check out the link in a different tab.
Link to an existing content: This is a handy way to link to your own blog post. Enter the keywords in the “Search” bar to filter you blog posts, select a desired one and click on “Add Link”.
- If you would like to schedule a post, make sure that you have set the correct timezone in WordPress. You can check this by navigating to Timezone under the General Settings. This ensures that your posts are going out at the right time.
- Add relevant tags to your blog posts. This helps the readers in easy navigation and getting hold of the information that they might be looking for.
- You can easily add media, embed tweets and YouTube videos in your blog post. Simple copy the embed code from those websites, switch to the “Text” editor tab and paste the code where you would like the media to appear in your blog post.
- What to share a pdf document with you readers? Just upload a pdf document by following the procedure explained in “Adding Images” section above. Once done, highlight the text that you want your readers to click to download the pdf, for example – “Download the pdf now!”. Select the “Add Media” button and choose the pdf you just uploaded. Select “Insert into Post” to finish it off. Pretty neat, huh!
